Spin on For Week 2 Training to 45K

Week Two Is Where Most People Quit. Here's How Not To

Week one is the easy part. New shoes, new motivation, maybe a new playlist. You show up, it feels good, you post about it. Then week two arrives and suddenly the couch has never looked more comfortable. This is the week that separates "I'm training for the Spinneys Challenge" from "I was training for the Spinneys Challenge." Let's make sure you're in the first group.

Why Week Two Feels Harder (Because It Is)

Nobody warns you about this bit. Week one runs on adrenaline. Week two runs on legs that are still a little sore, a schedule that isn't a novelty anymore, and a brain that's already looking for reasons to skip Tuesday. That's normal. It's not a sign you're unfit, it's just what habit formation actually feels like before it becomes automatic. Push through this week and the next one gets noticeably easier.

Three weeks left until October 18th and that 45km ride. This is exactly the point where consistency matters more than intensity.

What's In Store This Week

The goal isn't to ride harder, it's to ride longer, just slightly. Here's the shape:

  • Monday: Rest, or a light 20 minute spin to loosen up last week's legs.
  • Tuesday: 30 to 40 minutes, easy pace. This is about time in the saddle, not speed.
  • Wednesday: Rest or cross train. Walking, swimming, whatever keeps you moving without adding fatigue.
  • Thursday: 30 to 40 minutes again, same easy pace. Repetition builds the habit.
  • Friday: Rest.
  • Saturday: The big one. Your first genuinely long ride, aim for 45 to 60 minutes if last week topped out around 30. Take it slow. This isn't a test, it's a foundation.
  • Sunday: Easy recovery spin, or rest if Saturday took it out of you.

Notice what's missing. Nothing here is about going fast. Speed comes later. Right now you're just teaching your body that riding is a normal part of the week, not a special event.

The Part Nobody Puts in Training Plans

Motivation is going to dip this week. That's not a personal failing, it's just biology catching up with enthusiasm. The trick isn't waiting to feel motivated, it's removing every possible excuse between you and the bike. Lay out your kit the night before. Fill your bottle before bed. And if your bike is buried behind three other things in the garage, that's a decision point you're creating for yourself every single morning.

A Velohawk bike stand solves exactly this. It's not about the bike looking nice in the garage, it's about there being zero negotiation between "I should ride" and "I'm riding." Roll it off the stand and you're already moving. No searching, no untangling handlebars, no five minutes of friction that talks you out of the whole thing.

Lean On the Community

You don't have to grind through week two solo. A few places worth checking in on:

  • Wolfi's Dubai Roadsters rides and their High Performance Center are worth a look if you want a bit more structure than a spreadsheet can give you.
  • Ride Revolution if you'd rather hand the thinking over to a coach who already knows UAE heat and terrain.
  • Abu Dhabi Cycling Club, the capital's official club, runs around 80 events a year including group rides at Yas Marina Circuit and Al Hudayriat Island. Worth a look if you're based in Abu Dhabi and want company that isn't only Dubai centric.
  • Cycling Tracks of UAE, a quietly useful, community built map of every cycle track across the Emirates, handy for planning where Saturday's long ride actually happens.
  • r/UAEcycling, a small but active community for route tips, gear questions and blunt, honest answers when you need one.

Read This If Saturday Feels Impossible

If 45 to 60 minutes sounds like a stretch right now, that's fine. Split it. Ride 25 minutes out, turn around, ride home. The number on the clock matters less than the fact that you didn't skip it. Week three will feel different, but only if week two happened.

Missed a day already? Ride tomorrow. The plan bends, it doesn't break.

We'll check back in for week three. Until then, get out the door.
